Monthly Visit Scenario
Mary is 78 years old and resides in her one-and-a-half-story bungalow in East Hamilton. This is the home where she and her husband, Peter, raised their two children together.
Sadly, Peter passed away three years ago, leaving Mary all on her own. Mary has lived in their family home for 53 years and can’t imagine herself living anywhere else.
Both children have become increasingly concerned about their mother, who has spent a lot of time alone over the last three years. Unfortunately, Mary’s children live out of town with her daughter on the west coast and their son six hours away in Ottawa, Ontario.
Mary manages her day-to-day life independently and says she is perfectly happy following her regular weekly routines. She participates in community programs at the local recreation centre, grocery shops once a week, and attends all of her medical appointments.
Mary’s son regrets that he cannot visit her more often and fears that his mother’s home is no longer safe for her to be living in alone. However, Mary’s children cannot be there physically for their mother, causing them significant stress.
With a monthly visit, Mary’s children will receive peace of mind knowing their mother is safe at home, where she feels most comfortable.
An @home care provider ensures Mary is not at risk of having a fall. Mary’s home is inspected for hazardous objects like loose cords, out-of-place furniture, area rugs, and old parcels.
Food supply levels are observed, and all expiry dates on food items in the home are checked to ensure freshness and quality. Anything that is no longer good is removed from her home.
Mary’s @home care provider changes all of the linens in the house (bedding, bath and kitchen towels), takes out the garbage and checks for any outstanding mail.
All smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are checked for effectiveness, and the thermostat. The home’s temperature will be recorded and if needed, adjusted to ensure Mary’s comfort.
Anything in the house that is not functioning will be removed and replaced. Mary can get her landscaping needs taken care of by a recommended professional. Medication records are also checked to ensure that she takes her medication regularly.
Whatever Mary needs to support independent living at home, her @home care provider is there to help.
